What are Wegovy (Semaglutide) Tablets?

Wegovy tablets are a once-daily prescription medicine from Novo Nordisk for weight loss and weight maintenance. They contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, and offer an oral option for adults who prefer tablets to injections. The MHRA approved Wegovy tablets in June 2026.

Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It may be suitable for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 to below 30 with at least one weight-related health condition. Our prescribing team will assess your medical history and current medicines before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.

How Do Wegovy Tablets Work?

Semaglutide acts like the natural GLP-1 hormone involved in appetite regulation. It helps you feel satisfied with less food and reduces hunger and food cravings. This can make it easier to follow the eating plan agreed with your clinician.

Wegovy supports a longer-term approach to weight management. Your response will be reviewed during treatment, alongside tolerability, nutrition and activity. Weight loss varies between people and is not guaranteed.

A Daily Tablet with a Specific Morning Routine

The tablet strengths are 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg. Treatment usually begins with the lowest strength and increases gradually under the direction of your prescriber. The recommended maintenance dose is 25 mg once daily.

For the medicine to be absorbed properly, take it after an overnight fast, with a small amount of water, and wait before breakfast, other drinks or oral medicines. Full instructions are provided in the Directions tab and the patient leaflet.

Prescription Assessment and Ongoing Support

Complete the confidential online consultation so our prescribing team can check eligibility, potential interactions and any precautions relevant to you. Supply is subject to clinical approval and stock availability. Follow your prescription and keep the patient leaflet for reference.

Read the Directions, Side Effects and Important Warnings & Precautions tabs before starting treatment.

Directions

Daily Dose and Gradual Increases

Follow the dose on your prescription. The usual schedule is:

  • Month 1: 1.5 mg once daily.
  • Month 2: 4 mg once daily.
  • Month 3: 9 mg once daily.
  • Month 4 onwards: 25 mg once daily.

Spend at least one month at each dose. Your prescriber may delay an increase if needed. Take only one tablet each day; do not combine tablets to make a higher dose.

How to Take Your Tablet

  1. Take it after at least 8 hours without food, usually first thing in the morning.
  2. Swallow it whole with plain water, no more than 120 mL. Do not split, crush or chew it.
  3. Wait at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks or any other oral medicine.

Following this routine helps the tablet work properly. Coffee, juice or breakfast taken too soon can reduce absorption.

Missed Dose or Too Much Medicine

Skip a missed dose and take your usual dose the next day. Do not double up. If you take more than prescribed, seek medical advice straight away. Contact your prescriber after a longer interruption before restarting.

Read the UK patient leaflet for full administration instructions.

Side Effects

Possible Side Effects

Some people develop nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach discomfort or tiredness. Headache and indigestion are also reported. Symptoms can be more noticeable when starting or increasing the dose. Tell your pharmacist or prescriber if they persist or interfere with eating or drinking.

Other effects can include reflux, burping, bloating, dizziness, hair loss and changes in taste. This is not a complete list; check the leaflet supplied with your medicine.

When to Get Medical Help

  • Pancreatitis: stop treatment and seek urgent care for severe, ongoing abdominal pain, particularly if it reaches your back or comes with vomiting. Do not restart if pancreatitis is confirmed.
  • Severe allergy: call 999 for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, or collapse.
  • Vision changes: seek urgent advice for sudden loss of vision or quickly worsening eyesight.
  • Severe constipation: seek urgent advice if accompanied by significant bloating, pain or vomiting.
  • Low blood sugar: sweating, shaking, confusion or palpitations need prompt attention, especially if you also use insulin or a sulfonylurea.

Ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration; get advice if you cannot keep fluids down. Report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Important Warnings & Precautions

Before Starting Treatment

Do not take Wegovy if you have an allergy to semaglutide or any tablet ingredient. Tell your prescriber about previous pancreatitis, kidney or liver disease, gallbladder problems, diabetic eye disease, or severe digestive problems such as gastroparesis.

Wegovy tablets are for adults. They are not recommended for people under 18. Do not combine them with another GLP-1 medicine or another semaglutide product.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use effective contraception during treatment and discuss pregnancy plans with your prescriber. Stop semaglutide at least two months before trying to conceive. Contact your clinician promptly if you become pregnant.

Other Medicines and Procedures

Give your prescriber a complete medicine list. Insulin or sulfonylureas may require adjustment; levothyroxine and oral anticoagulants such as warfarin may require additional monitoring. Do not change these medicines yourself.

Tell the team before surgery or sedation that you take Wegovy because it slows stomach emptying. Avoid driving or machinery if dizzy or experiencing low blood sugar.

See the UK prescribing information for full precautions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need a Prescription?

Yes. Wegovy tablets require a prescription. Complete our online consultation so the prescribing team can assess whether the treatment is suitable. Prescription approval is a clinical decision.

Are Wegovy Tablets Approved in the UK?

The MHRA approved the tablets for adult weight management in June 2026. Supply still depends on the pharmacy having the appropriate stock and your prescription being approved.

How Are They Different from Wegovy Injections?

Both contain semaglutide. The tablets are taken every day and the injections usually once weekly. The tablet dose numbers cannot be compared directly with injection doses. Your clinician must decide any switch.

Can I Switch from Mounjaro or Foundayo?

Ask your prescriber for an individual transition plan. Tell them your current product, dose and last dose date. Do not overlap treatments or select a tablet dose yourself.

Can I Take It with Breakfast or Coffee?

No. Take it after the overnight fasting period with plain water and wait at least 30 minutes before breakfast, coffee, other drinks or oral medicines. Build the waiting period into your morning routine.

Will I Need to Change My Diet?

Treatment is intended to accompany reduced calorie intake and increased activity. Agree achievable goals with your clinician and review progress regularly. Results differ between people.

What Does One Month Supply Mean?

The options here are for 30 tablets, taken as one tablet daily. Use the strength on your prescription and arrange a review before changing dose.

Is This an NHS Prescription Service?

This listing is for private treatment. NHS access has separate assessment and funding criteria; a private consultation does not establish NHS eligibility.
