Sore throat

A sore throat is a painful, scratchy, or irritated feeling in the throat that often makes it uncomfortable to swallow. It is a common symptom, frequently caused by viral infections like the common cold or flu, but can also be due to bacterial infections such as strep throat, or irritants like dry air or pollutants.

We might be able to help if you:

  • Are 18 or over,

  • or have a child aged 5 and above with a sore throat

Have symptoms including:

  • A raised temperature (above 38C)

  • Pain when swallowing

  • Red, inflamed tonsils

  • White, streaky patches on the tonsils

If you are pregnant or under the age of 16, this service is not appropriate, and you should make an appointment with your doctor.

Additionally, a persistent sore throat lasting for 12 months (or occurring 7 or more times within that period) requires a review by your GP.
