Contraceptive Pills: Your Guide to Birth Control Tablets

What Are Contraceptive Pills?

Contraceptive pills, including birth control tablets and the mini pill, are daily medications designed to prevent pregnancy, regulate menstrual cycles, and treat acne. These birth control pills work by using hormones to inhibit ovulation, making it more difficult for sperm to fertilise an egg. Additionally, these contraceptive tablets alter the uterine lining, reducing the likelihood of a fertilised egg implanting. By consistently taking these birth control pills, you can effectively manage reproductive health and address various hormonal issues.

How Do Contraceptive Pills Work?

Contraceptive pills, whether they are combined pills or the mini pill, are usually taken daily or in a 21-day cycle to prevent pregnancy. These anti-conception tablets work by:

  1. Stopping Ovulation: Hormones in the pills inhibit the release of an egg from the ovary.
  2. Thickening Cervical Mucus: This makes it more challenging for sperm to reach and fertilise an egg.
  3. Altering the Uterine Lining: This reduces the chances of a fertilised egg implanting.

There are two primary types of birth control pills:

  • Combined Pills: These BC pills contain both oestrogen and progestogen. They are taken in a cycle with breaks between packs.
  • Progestogen-Only Pills (Mini Pill): These are taken continuously without breaks.

Both types of contraceptive pills are over 99% effective when used correctly, though their effectiveness can decrease if pills are missed.

In addition to preventing pregnancy, contraceptive tablets can help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce menstrual cramps, and manage acne. They may also lower the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers.
