What is Impetigo?
Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection frequently found in children, though adults can also contract it. It manifests as blisters or weeping sores on the face, hands, and other exposed areas, which later crust over with yellowish scabs. These sores can be painful or itchy.
Caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes, impetigo spreads easily through close contact or by sharing items like towels, clothing, or toys. It often begins in minor cuts, insect bites, or rashes, but it can also develop on healthy skin.
Despite being highly contagious and uncomfortable, impetigo is not a serious condition and can resolve on its own over time. However, treatment with antibiotics, either in topical or oral form, can help clear it up more quickly and reduce the risk of spreading the infection to others. Good hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing and keeping affected areas clean and covered, can help prevent the spread of impetigo.
