Sumatriptan is a medication used to treat acute migraine attacks, with or without aura (temporary visual or sensory disturbances). It does not prevent future migraines or reduce their frequency. Instead, it helps to relieve headache pain and other symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. Sumatriptan works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing inflammation. It should be used as directed by a healthcare professional to be effective and to minimise side effects.

Please note: This treatment is only available for those who have been diagnosed with migraines in the past

Description

How does sumatriptan work?

Sumatriptan works by targeting and constricting blood vessels around the brain that have swollen during a migraine. It also reduces inflammation in the brain. This helps to alleviate the migraine headache and associated symptoms by counteracting the changes that occur during a migraine attack.

Warnings

Who should not use Sumatriptan?

It is NOT recommended for people who:

  • Are under the age of 18 or over 65
  • Suffered/suffering from heart stroke, angina, heart attack, high blood pressure
  • Have liver kidney problems
  • Allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients
  • Pregnant

Directions

Sumatriptan tablets are not intended for use before symptoms appear as a preventative measure. They are most effective when taken at the first sign of a migraine headache but can also be used once the headache has begun. Avoid taking them during the aura phase.

The standard dose is one 50mg tablet, swallowed whole. However, some individuals may need the 100mg tablet. You may take a second tablet after 2 hours if symptoms persist and have partially improved with the first dose. The maximum allowable dose in 24 hours is 300mg, which is either 6 x 50mg tablets or 3 x 100mg tablets.
