Some women find themselves in situations where they would like to delay their period, so it comes at a convenient time. For instance, during their wedding, some women may prefer to delay their period. Norethisterone is a period delay tablet. It should be taken three days before your period for it to be effective. It is a synthetic version of progesterone, a natural female hormone that sustains the womb lining. It can cause period delays for up to 16 days.

Description

Before your menstrual period, the levels of the female sex hormone progesterone drops. Norethisterone works by sustaining the womb lining and delays a period until you stop taking the tablets. Norethisterone is also present in some contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapies for menopause. The drug is not a contraceptive.

Warnings

Norethisterone may be unsuitable for you if you are currently taking other medications. Be sure to consult your GP for medical interactions.

Do not take Norethisterone during pregnancy.

If a dose is late or missed, you may find that you experience some light bleeding or spotting. Use some panty liners or similar items if needed.

Directions

Take Norethisterone three times daily, starting three days before your period is due until you wish your period to resume. Your period should come within two to three days after stopping Norethisterone.

Don't use Norethisterone to stop your period once it starts. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless your next tablet is nearly due, in which case skip the missed dose and take the following amount at the regular time.

Ingredients

Each tablet contains 5mg of Norethisterone.

Norethisterone tablets also contain lactose, maize starch, and magnesium stearate.

Side Effects

Some people may experience side effects from using Norethisterone tablets.

Stop using and consult your doctor immediately if any of the following happens:

  • A severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face and wheezing
  • Thrombosis (a blood clot in the leg or lungs) -
    • This would have symptoms of throbbing/swelling pain in one leg (rarely both legs)
    • Difficulty breathing that comes on suddenly
    • Coughing up blood 
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • A significant rise in blood pressure or persistent headaches
