Description

How does Levonorgestrel Work?

Levonelle works by blocking ovulation during menstruation. The drug thickens the vaginal fluid and prevents the sperm from reaching the egg for fertilisation to occur. By so doing, the embryo fails to attach to the uterine wall, so there is no pregnancy. Levonorgestrel does not stop an existing pregnancy. It only works as an emergency way to prevent unplanned conception.

Warnings

Warnings When Using Levonorgestrel

Do not take Levonelle if you suffer from any of these conditions:

  • If you have ever had an ectopic pregnancy.
  • If you have ever had inflammation of the Fallopian tubes.
  • If you have bowel disease that interferes with food digestion.
  • When suffering from severe liver problems.

For any extra information, please contact your healthcare provider or contact us.

Directions

Take the tablet as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after you have had unprotected sex. Do not delay taking the tablet. The tablet works best the sooner you take it after having unprotected sex. It can only prevent you becoming pregnant, if you take it within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

If another unprotected intercourse takes place after the use of Levonelle 1500 (also if this is during the same menstrual cycle), the tablet will not exert its contraceptive effect and there is again the risk of pregnancy.

If you vomit within 3 hours of taking this medication, the pill may not be absorbed. Consult your doctor to ask if you need to repeat the dose to avoid getting pregnant.
