Frovatriptan is used to treat acute migraine attacks. Frovatriptan is typically taken as a tablet, and its effects can last longer than some other triptans, which can be beneficial for people who experience prolonged migraines.

Like other triptans, it should be used as directed by a healthcare professional, as it may not be suitable for everyone and can have potential side effects.

Description

How does Frovatriptan Work?

Frovatriptan is a selective agonist for serotonin (5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors) in cranial arteries. It causes vasoconstriction, reducing sterile inflammation associated with antidromic neuronal transmission. This action correlates with relief from migraine pain.

By narrowing blood vessels around the brain, frovatriptan blocks pain signals from being sent to the brain. It also stops the release of certain natural substances that cause pain, nausea, and other migraine symptoms.

FAQs

When should I take Frovatriptan?

Frovatriptan is most effective when taken at the onset of the headache phase of a migraine. It should not be used as a preventive measure for migraines. If you find that your symptoms do not improve after taking frovatriptan, do not take an additional dose. For optimal results, use frovatriptan as directed at the first sign of a migraine headache.

How is Frovatriptan different from other migraine tablets?

What sets frovatriptan apart is its unusually long half-life. This means it remains active in the body for an extended period. If you experience migraines that recur within a day or two, frovatriptan could be particularly beneficial.

Which is better - Sumatriptan or Frovatriptan?

Both frovatriptan and sumatriptan are effective for treating migraines, but they have some differences:

Frovatriptan remains effective for longer periods due to its longer half-life. However, this longer duration also means it has a slower onset of relief (takes a longer time to work).

Sumatriptan has a shorter half-life, leading to faster onset of action and takes less time to work. It’s one of the most common triptans used for migraines.
