Description

Esomeprazole is a type of proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Proton pumps are enzymes that help make acid in the lining of your stomach which allows the digestion of food.

Esomprazole works by stopping these from working correctly and in turn, reudcing the amount of acid the stomach makes.

FAQs

How long does it take for Esomprazole to work?

Normally, you should feel better within 2 - 3 days. However, sometimes it may take up to 4 weeks. If you don't feel better after 4 weeks of taking Esomeprazole, you will need to speak to your doctor

Can I drink alcohol while taking Esomeprazole?

Alcohol doesn't interact with Esomeprazole but drinking alcohol can increase the amount of acid the stomach produces. Cutting down your alcohol in the long run can help reduce your stomach acid.

Is there any food/drink that interacts with Esomeprazole?

No. Fatty & spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol can all make your acid reflux symptoms worse. Trying to reduce these in the long term can also help reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces.

Are there any long-term side effects?

Taking esomeprazole longer than 3 months may reduce your magnesium levels in your blood.

Symptoms of low magnesium may include tiredness, confusion, muscle twitches, dizziness, and an irregular heartbeat. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your doctor.

Taking Esomeprazole longer than 1 year may increase some side effects such as:

  • bone fractures
  • gut infections
  • vitamin B12 deficiency

Your doctor will regularly monitor your health to determine if continued use of esomeprazole is necessary.
