Description

Vardenafil is a medication classified as a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5). Its primary function is to relax the smooth muscles in the penis, which allows for increased blood flow through the penile blood vessels. As a result, this improved blood circulation leads to a firm and sustained erection, facilitating sexual intercourse.

Warnings

Do not use Vardenafil if:

  • You are allergic to vardenafil or any of its ingredients. Allergic reactions may include rash, itching, swelling of the face or lips, and shortness of breath.
  • You are taking nitrate medications, such as glycerol trinitrate for angina, or nitric oxide donors like amyl nitrite, as combining these with vardenafil can significantly affect your blood pressure.
  • You are using ritonavir or indinavir, medications for HIV infections.
  • You are over 75 years old and taking antifungal medications such as ketoconazole or itraconazole.
  • You have severe heart or liver issues.
  • You are undergoing kidney dialysis.
  • You have recently had a stroke or heart attack.
  • You have or have had low blood pressure.
  • Your family has a history of degenerative eye diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa.
  • You have ever experienced vision loss due to damage to the optic nerve from inadequate blood supply, known as non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).
  • You are taking riociguat, a drug used for pulmonary arterial hypertension or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Combining riociguat with vardenafil may enhance the hypotensive effects of the medication. Consult your doctor if you are on riociguat or are unsure.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Vardenafil if you:

  • Have heart problems, as engaging in sexual activity may pose risks.
  • Suffer from irregular heartbeats (cardiac arrhythmia) or inherited heart conditions affecting your electrocardiogram.
  • Have a physical condition that alters the shape of the penis, such as angulation, Peyronie’s disease, or cavernosal fibrosis.
  • Have a condition that can cause persistent erections (priapism), such as sickle cell disease, multiple myeloma, or leukaemia.
  • Have stomach ulcers (gastric or peptic ulcers).
  • Have a bleeding disorder (e.g., haemophilia).
  • Are using other treatments for erectile dysfunction, including other vardenafil-containing medications.
  • Experience a sudden decrease or loss of vision, discontinue use of vardenafil and contact your doctor immediately.
