Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. It spreads through close contact via nasal or throat droplets, such as coughing, sneezing, or kissing. Meningitis can be life threatening and the symptoms are:
- Fever & severe persistent headache
- Stiff Neck & sensitivity to light
- Nausea and Vomiting
- Confusion
- Rash
The Meningococcal vaccine can be offered to travellers visiting parts of the word where the risk of meningococcal disease is high. It can also be used to immunise family members and close contacts of confirmed disease cases of meningitis caused by groups A, C, W135 & Y.

One single dose required
Boosters: you can get a booster five years after your last jab if you need it for a meningitis ACWY certificate.

You cannot receive the vaccine if you have had an allergic reaction to it or any of its components in the past, or if you currently have a fever.
If you are getting vaccinated prior to going to a risk area, you should aim to get the jab at least 10 days beforehand.

In the UK, meningitis vaccination is generally recommended for:
- Travellers visiting parts of the world where the risk of meningococcal disease is high.
- Healthcare workers.
- People travelling to Saudi Arabia for pilgrimages to Hajj and Umrah, as proof of meningitis vaccination is an entry requirement.
- Family members and close contacts of confirmed cases of meningitis A, C, W135, or Y.
The most common side effects are local reactions at the site of injection, such as pain and erythema.
Other common side effects include headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting.
