Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver and it can be caused by contaminated food or water. It is common in countries with poor sanitation and limited access to safe food and water. Hepatitis A can cause mild to severe symptoms, including fever and digestive issues. It can cause complications such as liver failure.
Dose
Adult and children above the age of 1 year
The course consists of one single dose that protects you for one year.
Booster
A booster dose at 6 to 12 months will give immunity for up to 20 years.
A further booster at 20 years is required for those at ongoing risk.

You cannot receive the vaccine if you have had an allergic reaction to it or any of its components in the past, or if you currently have a fever.
It is important to have hepatitis A vaccine if you are:
- Travelling to high-risk areas, especially in regions with poor sanitation or limited access to clean water.
- Suffering from chronic liver disease.
- Consuming raw or undercooked foods, especially seafood, or engaging in activities that might expose you to the virus.
Very common (more than 1 in 10 people)
- Headache, fatigue, local pain
Common (more than 1 in 100 people)
- Hardening of the skin, redness, swelling, feeling sick, fever, nausea
Uncommon (more than 1 in 1000 people)
- Dizziness, skin rash, skin itch, vomiting
You should avoid getting this vaccine if you currently have a high fever or are experiencing any type of stomach issue, like diarrhoea. Please wait until you feel better to book.
You need to practise food safety as well as water and hand hygiene while in an area where hepatitis A is endemic.
