What is Shingles?

Shingles is a viral infection characterised by a painful, red, blotchy rash that can blister and ooze. The rash typically appears on the body but can also occur near the eyes. The infection usually lasts between 7 to 21 days. Even after the rash clears, the skin may remain painful for some time. It is possible to experience shingles more than once.

While shingles is most common in adults over the age of 70, it can affect other age groups, especially those who have recently been ill or have a weakened immune system. Children and teenagers can develop shingles if they have previously had chickenpox.

The main symptoms of shingles are

  • A tingling or painful sensation in a specific area of the skin
  • A headache or general feeling of being unwell
  • A rash typically appears a few days afterward.

You cannot transmit shingles directly to others. However, individuals who have never had chickenpox can catch chickenpox from you, as it is caused by the same virus. You cannot contract shingles from someone with shingles or chickenpox.

Medication

Shingrix, is a non-live vaccine administered in two doses. It is designed to lower your risk of developing shingles. If you develop shingles after vaccination, the symptoms are likely to be less severe and the illness shorter in duration. The vaccine also strengthens your immunity against future shingles outbreaks. Research indicates that the protection provided by the vaccine lasts for at least 5 years, though it may last even longer.

If you’ve previously had shingles, you can still receive the vaccine, though a waiting period of up to one year since your last shingles.

2 Doses – 8 weeks apart

You cannot receive the vaccine if you have had an allergic reaction to it, any of its components in the past, pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you currently have a fever.

You should consider getting the Shingrix vaccine if you are 50 years old or older. The vaccine is recommended regardless of whether you've had shingles before, as it can help prevent future outbreaks and reduce the severity of symptoms if shingles does occur.
While getting the vaccine is a personal choice, it is strongly recommended for adults over 50 and those with weakened immune systems due to the significant benefits in preventing shingles and reducing the severity of the disease. If you're uncertain whether the vaccine is right for you, consult with your healthcare provider, who can consider your medical history and risk factors to provide advice.
