Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. It is most commonly spread through contaminated food and water, poor sanitation in area with inadequate hygiene and it can also be transmitted via close contact with an infected person who carry the bacteria.

The symptoms of typhoid fever typically develop 6 to 30 days after exposure and may include:

  • High Fever
  • Weakness and Fatigue: Extreme tiredness and lack of energy.
  • Abdominal Pain: Discomfort and pain in the stomach area.
  • Headache: Persistent and severe headaches.
  • Rash: Rose-colored spots, especially on the chest and abdomen.
  • Loss of Appetite: Decreased desire to eat and resulting weight loss.
  • Constipation or Diarrhoea: Gastrointestinal disturbances, which may vary between individuals.

If untreated, typhoid fever can lead to severe complications such as intestinal bleeding or perforation, which can be life-threatening. Vaccination is recommended for people traveling to areas where typhoid fever is common.

One dose gives 3 years of protection.

Vaccine Information

You should complete the vaccine course at least two weeks before your travel.

Maximum protection is achieved one month after vaccination.

Typhoid Vaccination Information

In the UK, typhoid vaccination is generally not recommended for most travellers. It is only advised for those who are at higher risk, including:

  • Travel to high risk areas
  • Occupational risk
  • Close contact with infected individuals

Very common side effects (affecting 1 in 10 people)

  • Pain, redness, swelling, and hardness at the site at which the vaccination was administered.

Common (affects 1 in 100 people)

  • Fever

Other possible reactions

  • Headache, asthma, diarrhoea, joint pain, rashes, tiredness, malaise
