Description

Maloff Protect is particularly recommended for the prevention of P. falciparum malaria, as it is effective against both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant strains, making it suitable for areas where the pathogen may be resistant to other antimalarials.

To determine if malaria prevention medication is recommended for your trip, you can use the Travel Health Pro website to find out which antimalarial is advised.

Warnings

Precautions with Maloff:

Please consult us before taking Malarone if you have severe kidney disease (stage 4 or 5).

Interactions with Other Medicines:

Inform us if you are currently taking, have recently taken, or may take any other medications, including over-the-counter drugs. Some medications can affect how Maloff works, or it may alter the effectiveness of other medications. This includes:

  • Metoclopramide (used to treat nausea and vomiting)
  • Antibiotics such as tetracycline, rifampicin, and rifabutin
  • Efavirenz or certain highly active protease inhibitors (used to treat HIV)
  • Warfarin and other blood thinners
  • Etoposide (used to treat cancer)

Please notify us if you start any new medications while taking Malarone.

Usage Instructions:

Take Maloff with food or a milky drink if possible, as this can enhance absorption and improve the effectiveness of the treatment.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not take Malarone unless advised by our specialist. Please contact us for further guidance or information.

If you experience diarrhea, you should continue with the regular dosing schedule. Although diarrhea or vomiting may reduce the absorption of atovaquone, these symptoms did not decrease the efficacy of Maloff Protect for malaria prevention. However, as with other antimalarials, those experiencing diarrhea or vomiting should be advised to continue using repellents and bed nets, to prevent malaria.

For any extra information, please contact your healthcare provider or contact us.

Directions

Take ONE tablet ONCE daily

Treatment should be started 2 days before entering the risk area

Continue taking ONE tablet ONCE daily for 7 days after leaving the risk area

In the event of vomiting within one hour of dosing a repeat dose should be taken.

What if I Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose, don’t worry. Simply take it as soon as you remember and then continue with your regular schedule. Do not take an extra tablet to compensate for the missed dose. Always use insect repellents to avoid mosquito bites.

Important Note

If you develop flu-like symptoms while traveling or within a year of returning, see a doctor immediately and inform them of your travel history. Many tropical illnesses, such as malaria, can initially present with cold or flu-like symptoms.

If you're traveling to a country or area where there's a risk of malaria, it is important to take steps to reduce the chance of being bitten, such as using insect repellents and mosquito nets. A factsheet with advice on bite avoidance measures is attached below and should be read before your trip.
