What is the Pill?

Contraceptive pills are small tablets taken daily to prevent pregnancy, regulate menstrual cycles, or treat acne. These pills work by using hormones to inhibit ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary), making it more difficult for sperm to fertilise an egg. Additionally, they alter the uterine lining, reducing the likelihood of a fertilised egg implanting. By consistently taking these pills, you can effectively manage reproductive health and address various hormonal issues.

How do contraceptive pills work?

Contraceptive pills are taken daily or for 21 days at a time to prevent pregnancy. These pills use hormones to stop ovulation, ensuring no egg is released for fertilisation. They also thicken cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg, and alter the uterine lining to prevent a fertilised egg from implanting.

There are two main types: combined pills, containing oestrogen and progestogen, and progestogen-only pills. Combined pills are taken in a cycle with breaks, while progestogen-only pills are taken continuously. Both types are over 99% effective when used correctly but can be less effective if pills are missed.

In addition to preventing pregnancy, contraceptive pills regulate menstrual cycles, reduce cramps, and manage acne. They can also lower the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer.
