If you are scheduled for a gastroscopy or endoscopy, you will likely need to stop taking lansoprazole a few weeks prior to the procedure. Please consult your GP for guidance.
Lansoprazole use is associated with a slight increase in the risk of fractures at the hip, wrist, and spine. Patients are advised to follow [national guidelines for osteoporosis prevention and treatment and ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D. The risk of fractures is higher if you are also taking regular steroid medication (source).
Lansoprazole can cause low levels of vitamin B12. If you already have low vitamin B12 levels, discuss with your GP before taking this medication.
It can also lead to low magnesium levels, with symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, confusion, seizures, and irregular heart rhythms. This risk increases when taken with other drugs like digoxin that can also lower magnesium levels. Periodic blood magnesium level checks may be recommended if you are taking lansoprazole for longer than three months continuously.
A rare condition called subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) may occur. If you develop a skin rash on areas exposed to sunlight, consult your GP promptly.
